Political Upheaval in Assam as MLA Bharat Chandra Narah Resigns from Congress Over Ticket Denial

top-news

In a stunning turn of events, Bharat Chandra Narah, the MLA representing Nowboicha in Assam's Lakhimpur district, has tendered his resignation from the Indian National Congress with immediate effect. This decision comes in the wake of his wife, former MP Ranee Narah, being denied a ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency.

The announcement of Narah's resignation has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Assam, especially with the crucial Lok Sabha elections just around the corner, set to commence on April 19th. Narah's resignation letter, addressed to AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, contained a single line stating, "I do, hereby resign from the Indian National Congress with immediate effect."

Confirming the resignation, Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Assam, stated, "Yes, we have received his resignation letter," in a conversation with ANI.

This development adds to the recent political turmoil in Assam, where four Congress MLAs have already extended their support to the BJP-led government under Himanta Biswa Sarma. However, unlike Narah, these MLAs have not resigned from the Congress party. Additionally, Sherman Ali Ahmad, another MLA, was suspended for "anti-party" activities, further highlighting the internal strife within the Congress ranks.

The upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Assam, scheduled in three phases on April 19th, April 26th, and May 7th, have heightened political tensions in the state. In the previous Lok Sabha elections of 2014, the BJP secured 7 out of 14 seats in Assam, with the Congress and the AIUDF claiming three seats each. Subsequently, in the 2019 elections, the BJP increased its seat count to 9, while the Congress and AIUDF maintained their three and one seat(s) respectively.

As the electoral battleground heats up in Assam once again, Narah's resignation underscores the complex dynamics and fierce competition within the state's political arena. The aftermath of this decision is anticipated to have far-reaching implications as parties gear up for a high-stakes electoral showdown.
